Cambridge Companions Online includes Cambridge Companions in the areas of philosophy, religion and culture. The Cambridge Companions are collections of essays on particular topics or on particular individuals. The trial is available through March 7th.

Updates Added to Oxford Islamic Studies Online

Both primary source documents and article updates have been added to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. Twenty new primary source documents have been added, such as an excerpt from The Alchemy of Happiness, titled 'The Knowledge of Self' (c. 1100), as well as the 'Prologue to the Sair ul Ibad ilal Maad' (c. 1111). Updates on Southeast Asia include, 'Muslim Women's Issues and Groups in Cambodia', 'Religious Pluralism in Indonesia', and 'Muslim Minority in Myanmar'.

Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries Project Includes CTU Library

Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries is a project that documents both the architecture of library buildings and the artwork contained within those buildings. You can search the collection of photographs of buildings and artwork, and there is a feature to browse for specific artists. Some of the artists featured in the Bechtold Library include Lillian Brulc, Fred Henze and Christopher Krymski.

Library's Digitized Books on Women Religious Added to Internet Archive

The library's books from the latest proposal for CARLI's Book Digitization Initiative, Women Religious in the United States, have been added to the Internet Archive. Previous digitized items included multiple volumes of several Catholic periodicals, such as the Franciscan Herald and Catholic Fortnightly Review.

Statewide Database Trial Runs Through November 30th

The twelfth annual Try-It! Illinois statewide database trial begins October 1 and runs through November 30. Try-It! Illinois offers library staff and users an excellent opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources. Project Muse E-Books Available for Preview

Over 300 digital books, from 27 publishers, are available for free sample access on the ProjectMuse beta site until the end of 2011. Project Muse provides a platform for scholarly journal content from university press publishers, and will now include books from some of these publishers as well.

New CTU students will need to bring their student ID to the library in order check out books. Once you have registered your ID at the circulation desk, you can create an account in the library catalog.This account will allow you to place interlibrary loan requests, view your checked out items and renew them, email catalog records, and keep a list of favorites in your account. You can create this account at the login page by filling in the requested information, choosing an easy to remember user name and password, and filling in your library barcode information on the account creation page.

If you would like to use one of the ACTS libraries or the University of Chicago library, please sign up for an ACTS card at the circulation desk when you register your student ID.

The 2011 American Theological Library Association (ATLA) Conference will meet in Chicago June 8th-11th, and CTU will host the day on campus for conference attendees on Saturday, June 11th. The conference is hosted by both CATLA and the ACTS libraries, and draws on average over 250 attendees every year. The library is pleased to welcome colleagues to our campus!

New Feature from Ebsco - Listen to Full Text Articles

You can now listen to a small selection of full text articles from ATLA, CPLI and other Ebsco databases. In order to listen to an article, there must be an HTML full text version of the article; PDF full text articles do not have the listen feature. To use the listen feature, click on the title of the article, and then click on the "Listen" icon on the lower right. This book review on "Pope Innocent III and His World" demonstrates this new feature. You may want to try modifying the listening speed to your personal preference.

Update on Zotero and Ebsco

This new online catalog is simpler to search, and we hope it will improve everyone's experience of searching for library resources. If you have specific comments, problems or questions about the library catalog, please contact the library so that we can assist you.

In order to make the transition to the new catalog easier, all CTU library users should create an account at the login page by filling in the requested information, choosing an easy to remember user name and password, and filling in the library barcode information on the account creation page. Once you have created this account, you will be able to place interlibrary loan requests in VuFind, as well as view your account and renew items checked out from CTU and the I-Share libraries. If you have not registered your CTU ID card as your library card in the library, please register in the library before attempting to create a VuFind account.

The library has added the Chicago Manual of Style Online to assist students with constructing proper citations for assignments. You can browse the manual or search the contents, and a Quick Guide is provided to give examples of citations for the most common types of materials. The library provides many national and local newspapers online through Ebsco’s Newspaper Source. Go to http://ezproxy.ctu.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?profile=ehost to see descriptions of all of the library’s databases, and scroll down to Newspaper Source. Click on the database to search for news, or click on the title list to see which newspapers are included in this database.

Oxford Reference Online Premium has recently been updated with over 13,000 new entries. Some of the updates include revisions to the Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists and the Dictionary of Psychology, as well as the addition of new works, such as the Dictionary of Hinduism. The library has added two new JSTOR collections of journals. JSTOR's Arts & Sciences V will eventually contain 120 journals, and JSTOR's Ireland collection will contain 70 journal titles by the end of 2009. To view the list of available JSTOR collections at CTU, click here.

The library will be hosting a webinar about the eHRAF World Cultures database on Monday, March 30th at 1:30pm in room 504, and donuts will be served. Topics will include types of materials included in the database, the subject headings and organizational principles that are applied to the cultural materials, and how to use the searching and browsing functions of the database. The webinar will be conducted by Christiane Cunnar from eHRAF, and will be conducted by conference call and by a demonstration projected from the computer in the room. This webinar would be of interest to anyone who is interested in making the most of the ethnographic materials in eHRAF.

The library has two more databases you may want to check out. Oxford Biblical Studies Online is available on a trial basis through April 18th. OBSO includes several Bible translations, commentaries and reference works. This database is available at http://www.ctu.lib.il.us/trialdatabases. The library has also added Camio, a collection of art museum images, to its collection of online resources. Images in the collection are licensed for educational use. The library has a new database available on trial until June 30th. JSTOR's 19th Century British Pamphlets includes over 20,000 pamphlets digitized by major British libraries. The trial is available as part of JSTOR, or you can go to the trial database link on the library web page at http://www.ctu.lib.il.us/find-articles-0.

The library has added the Australasian Religion Index to its collection of online resources. This index covers over 80 journals published in Australia and New Zealand, and covers religious studies, theology, history and sociology. The library will be conducting two walk-in workshops in February. The new library resources workshop will give a brief overview of some of the resources the library has added over the past year, such as JSTOR, online encyclopedias, eHRAF World Cultures, SFX, and more. The introduction to library resources for health sciences workshop will give an overview of areas in the health sciences that have interdisciplinary applications, including psychology and public health, and which are of interest to the CTU community. Walk-ins are welcome, but we invite you to sign up at the library front desk so that we will know how many people to expect.

The library is testing a new service, EZProxy, which will enable CTU students, faculty and staff to login to any library database from off campus. CTU library patrons can test this service with the JSTOR archive of journals. Also available for testing is the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology. For the purpose of testing, both on and off campus users will be asked to login with their library card. The library has added the online version of the Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls to its collection. The Encyclopedia offers an interdisciplinary view of the Scrolls, with articles written by over 100 scholars from around the world. The library has added the Encyclopedia Britannica to its collection of online resources. In addition to the encyclopedia, Britannica Online includes a collection of classics of Western literature, a "this day in history" feature, and a biography of the day. The library has added a new database of electronic documents called eHRAF World Cultures. This database is a cross-cultural database that contains information on all aspects of cultural and social life. The annually growing eHRAF database is unique in that the information is organized by cultures and ethnic groups and the full-text documents are subject-indexed at the paragraph level. The library has a collection of eBooks from www.NetLibrary.com. The collection includes almost 2000 titles on various topics. To access these books from off campus, visit the NetLibrary web site while you are in the library, create a free account on the NetLibrary site, and then you will be able access NetLibrary books from any location. In addition, each month a different eBook is available for free as the featured book of the month.
