Library Exhibit on Romero, Grande, and the Catholic Church in Latin America

In honor of the presentation and book signing by CTU graduate Dr. Ana Maria Pineda of her recent book Romero & Grande: Companions on the Journey (2016), the Bechtold Library has created an exhibit that features her work as well as writings by and about both Archbishop Oscar Romero and Father Rutilio Grande, including their homilies and pastoral letters, and books on their legacies today, the Church and human rights in El Salvador and Latin America, Latino and liberation theologies, and contextual Christologies.

So come by the Library either before or after her talk to see some of our important collections on these topics.

Library Exhibit on Thomas Merton – Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi Dialogue

To coincide with CTU’s Winter Shapiro Lecture by Rabbi Or Rose on “A Dialogue of Devotion: Thomas Merton, Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, and Interreligious Friendship,” the Paul Bechtold Library has put together an exhibit from its collections that includes some of the letters from Merton to Rabbi Schachter-Salomi, writings by and about both Merton and Rabbi Schachter-Salomi on Judaism and Christianity, as well as recent works on Jewish-Catholic relations and interfaith dialogue.

Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception

The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception is now available online in an e-book format through the Library's web site.  This is a research tool that provides the latest scholarship on the Bible and its reception history -- including the origins and development of the Bible in its different canonical forms in Judaism and Christianity as well as the many diverse religious, theological, aesthetic, and cultural contexts in which the Bible has been received and interpreted.

Library Exhibit on Dorothy Day

The Paul Bechtold Library has created an exhibit in honor and celebration of the visit to CTU next Wednesday, March 8, at 12:00 p.m. of author Kate Hennessy, granddaughter of Dorothy Day, who will share her newly published memoir Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty: An Intimate Portrait of My Grandmother (Scribner, 2017).  The exhibit features this recently acquired memoir as well as Dorothy Day’s autobiography The Long Loneliness, selected collections of her writings, scholarly monographs, essays, and biographies on Dorothy Day.

Library Exhibit on Muslim-Catholic Dialogue

In conjunction with the 2017 National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue to be held at the CTU campus on Wednesday and Thursday, March 8-9, the Bechtold Library has created an exhibit from its collections that includes copies of the Qur'an, volumes on Islamic classical and contemporary theological discourse, and several monographs on Muslim-Catholic commonalities, intercultural, and interfaith dialogue.

BibleWorks 10 Available in Library

BibleWorks 10 is now available on the Bechtold Library’s computers. 

It provides the tools for comprehensive original language exegesis of the biblical texts as well as many other research and reference aids for biblical studies.

Two New Digital Resources on Interreligious Encounter and Global Catholicism

1)    Jan Phillips Database for Interreligious Encounter
An electronic database that focuses on the historical and contemporary encounters between and among Jews, Christians, and Muslims, including scholarship in comparative religions and theologies, hermeneutics, Qumran studies, Judaism/Islam/Christianity, prayer-spirituality-mysticism as well as guides for collaborative teaching.

2)  Journal of Global Catholicism
A new open access, international and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed electronic journal that seeks an understanding of the diverse forms of lived Catholicism in global context.  The Fall 2016 inaugural edition focuses on the various expressions of Catholicism in religiously pluralistic India.

Trial for the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception Online

The library currently has a trial for the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception. This reference work explores the current state of Biblical studies related to the formation of the canon in Judaism and Christianity, as well documenting the history of the Bible's reception within religious traditions and world cultures.

Additional Religion E-journals from Oxford University Press

The library has added a package of journals on religion from Oxford University Press. To see the complete list of ejournals available from Oxford University Press, check out the Oxford Journals list on the library's WorldCat A to Z list.

3rd Annual Theophilus Symposium and Journal Release Celebration

Theophilus: the Student Journal of the Catholic Theological Union will host its 3rd Annual Symposium on Tuesday, April 12th at 11:30am in the Atrium.This event features a presentation by the Paul Bechtold Library Faculty Choice Award winning author, as well as an exhibit of all of the student work published in this year’s edition of Theophilus, including peer-reviewed articles and commissioned columns. The journal release party will also unveil the 2016 cover, which will feature the artwork of a CTU student. Theophilus is an open-access journal published by the Catholic Theological Union through its Paul Bechtold Library.

Trial for Ebsco Full Text Finder

A trial for Ebsco's Full Text Finder is currently available. This service offers searching and browsing across many subject areas, including religion and theology. It includes all of the library's offerings from Ebsco, including ATLA Religion, as well as interdisciplinary resources such as Academic Search Complete. The trial is available through March 22nd.

March 2nd Deadline for Art Show Sponsored by Theophilus Journal

CTU student artists are invited to submit pieces for the CTU Art Show by March 2nd. The March exhibition is sponsored by Theophilus: The Student Journal  of Catholic Theological Union. Artists may submit their work by emailing a photo of the work to theophilus@ctu.edu, along with their name, a description of the work, the medium and the size. The winning art work will be featured on the cover of the 2016 issue of Theophilus, which will be unveiled at the journal release celebration on April 12th.

Theophilus is a student managed, reviewed, and edited Catholic journal of theology and pastoral ministry. It publishes peer-reviewed articles written by students of the Catholic Theological Union.Theophilus is an open-access journal published by the Catholic Theological Union through its Paul Bechtold Library.

These reference collections include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks and annotated bibliographies.

Chicago Manual of Style Workshops for February and March

This workshop will cover the basics of the Chicago Manual of Style: Documentation I System as used at CTU. We will review the CTU Writing Handbook for Chicago Manual of Style tips, the basic outline of key topics in the Chicago Manual of Style, and the Chicago Manual of Style Online. You may bring your lunch, and bring your laptop if you wish.

Zotero Workshop on February 23rd

Would you like to learn more about using Zotero to manage your citations and make bibliographies? This workshop will cover the basics of installing Zotero for Firefox, how to save citations to Zotero, and how to create citations in appropriate citation styles. You may bring your lunch, and bring your laptop if you wish; additional help will be available after the workshop if you need assistance in installing Zotero. Please install the Firefox browser on your laptop before attending the workshop.

Library Publishing Program Launches Open Access E-books

The library is pleased to announce the launch of Paul Bechtold Library Publications’ open access monographs for 2015. Paul Bechtold Library Publications is a Catholic online, open-access publisher of theology and pastoral ministry monographs at the Catholic Theological Union through the Paul Bechtold Library. Its mission is to serve the Church by providing a forum for theologians and pastoral ministers to engage the Catholic tradition in respectful, constructive, and critical dialogue. Its primary intent and direction is to promote a deeper understanding of the Christian faith and the mission of the Church.

The publications program includes two ebooks in its catalog, which are free to download. Preaching Matters: A Praxis for Preachers, offers practical strategies to new and experienced preachers. Married in Mission: A Handbook for Couples in Cross-Cultural Service is a guide for Christian couples serving in overseas ministries.

Interested authors are encouraged to view the editorial policies and review the submission guidelines before preparing a submission.

The library will be closed for the holidays from Thursday, December 24th until Sunday, January 3rd, 2016. The library will re-open on January 4th for J-Term classes.
