eHRAF Brown Bag Workshop on October 5th

Christiane Cunnar will present a webinar demonstrating the basics of using eHRAF World Cultures, an online cross-cultural database that contains information on all aspects of cultural and social life. This ethnographic database includes a variety of source documents (books, articles, and dissertations) that have been indexed and organized according to HRAF's comprehensive culture and subject classification systems.

Zotero Workshops - Basic and Advanced

Two brown bag workshops for basic Zotero and one workshop for advanced Zotero will take place on the following dates:

Zotero Basic Workshop - Thursday, September 27th, noon-1pm, Room 335
Zotero Advanced Workshop - Friday, September 28th, noon-1pm, Room 504
Zotero Basic Workshop - Thursday, October 4th, noon-1pm, Room 335

The basic workshop is intended to show how to install and use Zotero in order to create bibliographies and footnotes, while the advanced workshop will cover advanced search features and settings, as well as advanced features of the word processor add-on.
The advanced workshop is intended for those who have some experience using Zotero as an add-on to Firefox and with the word processor integration; if you would like a refresher on Zotero, or need assistance in installing any of the Zotero add-ons, please come to the basic workshop.

CRRA Symposium Hosted by DePaul University - Invitation and Call for Posters

A symposium co-sponsored by the Catholic Research Resources Alliance and DePaul University will be held at DePaul University's Lincoln Park Campus in Chicago on October 15-16, 2012. The theme will be:  Nurturing the ‘Spirit of Perfect Charity’: Libraries and Archives at the Intersection of Service and Scholarship in Catholic Social Justice Studies

 CRRA sponsored symposiums aim to bring together scholars, librarians and archivists to engage in topics within the broad sphere of Catholic Studies. Registration is open until September 14th, and proposals for poster sessions will be accepted until September 19th.

Project Muse E-books on Philosophy and Religion Added to Library Collection

The library has expanded access to Project Muse's collections on philosophy and religion by adding access to e-books as well as e-journals. Project Muse provides access to both e-journals and e-books published by numerous university presses and other academic publishers, such as the Franciscan Institute. When browsing or searching this collection, a green check mark will indicated items that are available to CTU.

Library's Digitized Books on Regional Catholic History Added to Internet Archive

Books from the library's latest proposal to CARLI's Book Digitization Initiative have been added to the Internet Archive.

These books range from local parish and diocesan histories, including several focusing on the German-American Catholic community, to the records of synods and congresses that took place in various regions of the United States.

New iMac Computer for Multimedia in the Library

The library now has an iMac desktop computer available for working with multimedia. The iMac includes iMovie for video editing, GarageBand for audio recording and editing, and Camtasia Studio for screen recording and video editing. Stay tuned for more software later this summer. A set of headphones with mic is available for checkout for use with the iMac or other library computers. All CTU library patrons are welcome to use the iMac, which is located in the AV viewing room.

Free BibleWorks Seminar on March 28th

A representative from BibleWorks will present a brief seminar on Wednesday, March 28th from 10am to noon in Room 333. The BibleWorks software program includes Greek, Hebrew and Septuagint Bibles, as well as translations into many languages, to assist with Biblical exegesis and research. BibleWorks also provides free Greek and Hebrew fonts, which can be used by anyone independent of the BibleWorks program. The workshop will highlight features of the most recent version of the program, BibleWorks 9.

Zotero Workshops - Basic and Advanced

Trial Available for Cambridge Companions Online

Cambridge Companions Online includes Cambridge Companions in the areas of philosophy, religion and culture. The Cambridge Companions are collections of essays on particular topics or on particular individuals. The trial is available through March 7th.

Updates Added to Oxford Islamic Studies Online

Both primary source documents and article updates have been added to Oxford Islamic Studies Online. Twenty new primary source documents have been added, such as an excerpt from The Alchemy of Happiness, titled 'The Knowledge of Self' (c. 1100), as well as the 'Prologue to the Sair ul Ibad ilal Maad' (c. 1111). Updates on Southeast Asia include, 'Muslim Women's Issues and Groups in Cambodia', 'Religious Pluralism in Indonesia', and 'Muslim Minority in Myanmar'.

Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries Project Includes CTU Library


Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries is a project that documents both the architecture of library buildings and the artwork contained within those buildings. You can search the collection of photographs of buildings and artwork, and there is a feature to browse for specific artists. Some of the artists featured in the Bechtold Library include Lillian Brulc, Fred Henze and Christopher Krymski.

The library now provides access to Project Muse Humanities, a collection of over 170 full text journals in the areas of literature, philosophy and history. You can browse a list of journals, or browse for available content in subject areas.
