The library has a 30 day trial for Oxford Handbooks Online. The trial includes handbooks in the areas of political science, philosophy, religion and business management. The trial ends January 9th.

I Want You to Know...


All are invited to attend the library’s after hours movie night on Friday, December 4th at 7p.m. The film will be Jellyfish, winner of the Camera D'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Jellyfish tells the story of three very different Tel Aviv women whose intersecting stories weave an unlikely portrait of modern Israeli life. A brief discussion time will follow the movie.

The library would like additional feedback on it's ATLA video tutorial. The flash drive giveaway is ongoing for the first week of November, and CTU students who watch the entire tutorial and complete the survey at the end can still receive a free flash drive. The video includes audio, so speakers or headphones are needed, and you will need to fill in your contact information at the end of the survey to receive a flash drive.

October is Theological Libraries Month! This October the library will kick off a film discussion group on Friday October 23rd at 7p.m. Movies will be selected from FilmMovement.com, which distributes films from film festivals from around the world.The film up for discussion will be The Island, winner of 5 Nika Awards (Czech Oscars) including best film. A brief discussion time will follow.

You can personalize Google Scholar to make it easier to find resources that are available to you through CTU's library. If you are off campus, follow Google's directions for setting your preferences so that links to CTU resources will appear in your Google Scholar search results. These links will appear automatically if you are using Google Scholar while on campus.

CTU can now provide access to the ATLAS collection of more than one hundred forty religion and theology journals to our alumni. Access to this online resource will allow alumni to use these core theology journals to support their research, wherever they may be serving in ministry. A list of journal titles included can be found at http://www.atla.com/products/titles/titles_atlas.html.

To login, go to ATLAS for Alum through Ebsco and enter the User ID and password. If you have not received the User ID and password, please contact Lisa Gonzalez.

The library has added two new databases. MasterFILE Premier is a general interest database that includes reference materials and primary documents, and would be useful for researching current events. Consumer Health Complete is a full text database on health-related topics. Both of these databases are from Ebsco.

I Want You to Know...

The Digital Library of the Catholic Reformation is currently available on a trial basis. This resource includes primary texts from the 16th and 17th centuries in Latin, English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Both a fully searchable text file as well as scans of the original documents are part of this database. To access this trial, click here.

The library has added JSTOR's 19th Century British Pamphlets collection to its collection of online resources. These pamphlets will provide access to primary sources from UK research libraries that have not been available online before. To access this collection, click here. You can add a bookmarklet to your web browser to make it easy to see if the library owns a book before you purchase it on Amazon. To install the bookmarklet, go to the website http://xisbn.worldcat.org/liblook2/index.htm and search for Catholic Theological Union. After the search is complete, drag the bookmarklet from your results to your browser's toolbar.If you use Firefox, you will need the Bookmarks Toolbar checked under View. To try out the bookmarklet, click on it the next time you are in Amazon looking at the web page for a particular book.

The library has added the Chicago Manual of Style Online to assist students with constructing proper citations for assignments. You can browse the manual or search the contents, and a Quick Guide is provided to give examples of citations for the most common types of materials. Oxford Reference Online Premium has recently been updated with over 13,000 new entries. Some of the updates include revisions to the Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists and the Dictionary of Psychology, as well as the addition of new works, such as the Dictionary of Hinduism. The library will be hosting a webinar about the eHRAF World Cultures database on Monday, March 30th at 1:30pm in room 504, and donuts will be served. Topics will include types of materials included in the database, the subject headings and organizational principles that are applied to the cultural materials, and how to use the searching and browsing functions of the database. The webinar will be conducted by Christiane Cunnar from eHRAF, and will be conducted by conference call and by a demonstration projected from the computer in the room. This webinar would be of interest to anyone who is interested in making the most of the ethnographic materials in eHRAF.

The library has two more databases you may want to check out. Oxford Biblical Studies Online is available on a trial basis through April 18th. OBSO includes several Bible translations, commentaries and reference works. This database is available at http://www.ctu.lib.il.us/trialdatabases. The library has also added Camio, a collection of art museum images, to its collection of online resources. Images in the collection are licensed for educational use. The library's next walk-in workshop will be Friday, February 27th, from 10-11am in Room 304. This workshop will give an overview of areas in the health sciences that have interdisciplinary applications, including psychology and public health, and which are of interest to the CTU community. We will highlight the library’s print and online resources in the areas of the health sciences, discuss alternatives to major resources in these areas that are not owned by our library, and options for accessing other resources.

This index covers over 80 journals published in Australia and New Zealand, and covers religious studies, theology, history and sociology. The library will be conducting two walk-in workshops in February. The new library resources workshop will give a brief overview of some of the resources the library has added over the past year, such as JSTOR, online encyclopedias, eHRAF World Cultures, SFX, and more. The introduction to library resources for health sciences workshop will give an overview of areas in the health sciences that have interdisciplinary applications, including psychology and public health, and which are of interest to the CTU community. Walk-ins are welcome, but we invite you to sign up at the library front desk so that we will know how many people to expect.

The library is testing a new service, EZProxy, which will enable CTU students, faculty and staff to login to any library database from off campus. CTU library patrons can test this service with the JSTOR archive of journals. Also available for testing is the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology. For the purpose of testing, both on and off campus users will be asked to login with their library card.
